Product Item Design is the core of industrial design and the key link of design implementation for the enterprise, it helps change raw materials into more valuable forms. Industrial designers position the function, performance, form, price and use environment of the product based on the cognition of natural and social attributes such as human's physiology, psychology and living habits. Meanwhile, considering the material, technology, structure, craft, form, color, surface treatment, decoration, cost and other factors, industrial designers conduct the item design from society, economy and technology. An excellent ID(Item Design) needs good structure design for perfect coordination. As an important part of ID, the structure design mainly focuses on the internal structure and mechanical part of products, promoting ID to be realized from conception to implementation and mass production. A practical and good product design must give priority to function, followed by consideration of shape. Moreover, the realization of various functions of the product is determined by a superior structural design. Structure design is one of the basic contents of mechanical design, and is also the most complex work link, playing a vital role in the whole process of product design.
Designers must conceive a series of related parts to realize various functions, but also take into account the compact structure and beautiful appearance of the product, so as to create a safe, durable, well-made product, yet with more economical cost and less manufacturing difficulty. Therefore, structure designers must feature all-around abilities of multi-objective spatial imagination and cross-domain coordination and integration, and can seek unity in opposition according to all sorts of requirements and restrictive conditions.
Product structure design, including appearance modeling and review, appearance prototype production, internal structure design and review, is an important step in the item design.

Item Design Process

1. Define the Design Content
After the item is approved, our marketing staff and designers will communicate with customers to understand the design content and the goal achieved by industrial design. Depending on the original product or product function model provided by the customer, we will analyze product functions and principle of realization, and structural rangeability, so as to determine product limitations and design focuses. 

2. Design Research
Design research is a necessary step for designers to carry out the design, and is the basis for design positioning and creation. This process enables industrial designers to know about the sales and competitors status of the product, the stage of product life cycle, and the opinions of the product's users and sellers. Only through a detailed investigation and analysis of similar products and famous brands in domestic and foreign sectors, as well as fully understanding of product demand, can we more accurately orient the creative needs of product users on the basis of predicting and evaluating the trend of product renewal and iteration. 

3. Ensure the Rough Structural Layout 
We start with a big data analysis of market demands, product pain points and bad reviews, then we have a brainstorming with our professional team to make the product concept clear. After that, we work with the customer to ensure the rough structural layout of the product, analyze the technical feasibility, commercial viability and cost budget. Finally, two or three design directions are confirmed in line with the customer's basic conception of the product.

4. Conceive Product Sketch
The idea sketch is the most important step of the whole product design, it will determine 70% of the cost and the product design effect. It is a way to quickly record the creative ideas generated through thinking. The early stage of idea sketch is often shown as a fleeting inspiration but lacks precise dimensional and geometric information, so it requires the designer to conceptualize and sketch the idea, draw various forms or note down the design information until determining three to four directions, then proceed to further design by designers.

5. Product 3D Drawing
3D modeling is the process of describing the product form and structure in 3D language. The biggest advantage is to make the design more intuitive and real. Observing and adjusting the product from multiple angles in a 3D space help us conceive the product structure more accurately and directly without fussy prototype trial production process, thus expressing the product ideas more specifically, and improving the quality of product design. The 3D drawings feature precise shape proportions and exquisite details, which can be easily used for communication with customers.

6. Multi-angle Effect Pictures
Multi-angle effect pictures allow us to feel the space volume of the product from multiple visual angles in a more intuitive way, thus comprehensively evaluating the product design and reducing the uncertainty of the design.

7. Product Color Design
Product color design is used to solve a series of requirements for product colors from customers. The initial color can be deployed via the computer to meet the different color needs of the same product and expand the customers' product line.

9. Structure Design
The product structure designer completes the production of 3D outside drawing according to the design requirements, and then produce the appearance prototype, whose main role is used to confirm the feasibility of product appearance. The structure design inside of the product  includes the front case, the bottom case, the decorative parts, the button and other parts. The structure designer is required to finish the work timely and meticulously, and is not allowed to be sloppy, otherwise it will affect the progress of the entire product development, and even cause serious consequences such as project suspension and mold scrapping, etc.

10. Assess & Confirm Structure Plan
After the product structure drawing is ready, we will organize the project staff to review the structure drawing together. The detailed review includes conflict between product shape and structure, conflict between mold and structure, choice of material, etc., and the product review report needs to be written. If there are no problems, after completing the review, the production prototyping can be prepared. 

11. Prototype Validation
The prototype validation is a very important and essential part of the project verification, we require every product to pass the prototype testing and validation. The structural prototype is to make a product or several products according to the product structure drawing before mould unloading, and next, verify the reasonableness of the structure by measurement, and confirm whether to proceed to mould unloading for the next step. The role of the prototyping is as follows:
A. Check the feasibility of the structure
The prototype is a physical object that can be touched and assembled, which can visually reflect the rationality of the structural design and can also be used to check the complexity of assembly in order to identify problems and solve them in advance.
B. Let customers experience the product in advance
After the assembly of the prototype is completed, it is a real product. Customers will be allowed to experience the product in advance, and make suggestions for revision before mould unloading, and use the prototype to do preliminary promotion and other work, so that the product will be known to consumers as soon as possible and further occupy the market.
C. Used for functional testing
It's an essential step to test new product development, especially for electronic products. Functional testing must be done repeatedly, and the structural prototype can be used for testing before mould unloading, greatly reducing the time for testing afterwards and thus bringing the product to market earlier.
D. Reduce the risk of direct mould unloading
For complex products, the structural prototype is especially important. Due to the mold manufacturing cost is high, ranging from tens of thousands to millions of RMB, if the irrationality of the structural design is found before mould unloading, it greatly reduces the risk of mold manufacturing, thus reducing losses.
